New Bandit takes Berkeley back to the future

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Berkeley Bandit, the last car designed and engineered by British brand Berkeley and built at Berkeley Coachworks in 1960. A company that built sports cars in the 1950s has announced it will produce vehicles again at the same site which closed its doors 60 years ago.

Production of the Berkeley Bandit will begin in 2021 at the Old Warden aerodrome in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.

Anyone here remember Berkeley? You’re completely forgiven if you don’t – the Biggleswade-based company produced mainly microcars way back in the 1950s but went into liquidation during a failed attempt at launching a mainstream sports car in 1960.

Berkeley Cars are a small sports car company from Biggleswade, about 15 miles from my house. They manufactured a series of microcars and superlight sports cars through the 1950s and 1960s powered by small motorcycle engines.
